Japan Disaster Appeal for Babies

As you may have seen in our previous blog entries, the 10,000 disposable feeding bottles that we sent to the affected region of Japan have now been distributed.

The members of the Japan Disaster Appeal for Babies have discussed what our next step should be, and have decided not to send any more bottles or other goods from the UK to Japan. This is mainly because the needs of those in the affected area have changed over time, and we believe that there are now other, more effective ways of providing support.

After our “special thanks” blog entry, we received a further anonymous donation of £25, bringing the total amount of donations received for the sending of disposable feeding bottles to £7344.16. If you made this donation, please do let us know; we would love to include your name in our "special thanks" list.

Thanks to the kind support of NNR Logistics and Cathay Pacific with logistics and shipping, the cost of sending the 10,000 feeding bottles was only £3954.96; much lower than our original estimate of £5000. All donated money left over (a total of £3389.20) has been sent to the Japan Red Cross Society as well as to Chikyu no Gakko and Peace Jam, the local Japanese NPOs that supported us with this project. Your extremely generous donations will be used to support babies and children in the affected areas.

This is the end of our disposable bottle project. Although the situation in the affected areas is slowing improving, it is estimated that full recovery will take at least 15 years. The mothers of the Japan Disaster Appeal for Babies are looking into ways in which they can continue to support those affected by the disaster. Some members are already working on a project to have disposable feeding bottles produced and sold in Japan.

This project was started by just three Japanese mothers living in the UK, and none of it would have been possible without your support. We can't thank you enough for everything you have done to make this project possible.

On June 1st and 2nd, Chikyu no Gakko distributed the disposable feeding bottles and ready-made milk along with stuffed toys, books and muslin squares at Yohku Benimaru Somakuroki branch in Fukushima near the troubled nuclear power plant.

We are glad to be able to help the mothers and babies in Fukushima.

5/13には仙台を拠点とする地球の楽好さんのボランティアさんが福島県相馬市のママ１０名へ
使い捨て哺乳瓶と液体ミルクを絵本やぬいぐるみなどと一緒に届けてくださいました。

原発がいまだに予断を許さない状況である福島では、
お母さん達は口に入れるモノに対して非常に注意しているとのこと。
また、子供たちは外で遊べず篭りっきりを強いられてストレスが溜まってしまっているそうです。

使い捨て哺乳瓶と液体ミルクで福島の赤ちゃんとお母さん達の負担が
少しでも軽くしてさしあげられますように。
